Chicken Pox – Use Natural Remedies to Get Your Kids Through It

Chicken pox used to be one of many diseases contagious diseases that were almost rites of passage from childhood. Since newborn vaccinations against chicken pox became standard in the mid-1990s, most children have not suffered like their parents to the intense itching blisters filled with water, fever and body aches that are characteristics chickenpox. But this does not mean that the disease is no longer a concern.

Even children vaccinated can still contract chicken pox, but with much milder symptoms. In fact, some cases may be so mild they go unnoticed or are misdiagnosed.

When adolescents and unvaccinated adults who manage to escape contracting the varicella-zoster virus in childhood not get it, it is generally more severe. Complications of chickenpox are rare but do occur, especially in older patients and those with weakened immune systems. They can include pneumonia and encephalitis (brain inflammation). Pregnant women and their fetuses are particularly vulnerable to complications chickenpox. It is important to contact the health practitioner if there are questions about varicella or complications.

Any person who has been exposed to chickenpox may develop shingles (herpes zoster), a painful and sometimes itchy rash later. The Scientists have conflicting opinions about whether a population is largely vaccinated to prevent or effectively contribute to more cases of shingles.

We believe that adults have had chickenpox in childhood strengthens immunity against shingles occasionally when they are exposed to the virus when are in the presence of infected children. With at least sixty per cent of infants vaccinated now, some researchers believe that this lack of exposure to infected children is the cause of cases of shingles to grow, while others argue that fewer cases of chickenpox can result in fewer cases of zona in the larger population.

But still, every time, or how severely a catch chickenpox, one fact is indisputable: the itchy blisters. Doctors may prescribe antihistamines to control itching, and fortunately there are many natural remedies can be used to relieve itching and other symptoms of a case of chickenpox may provide.
Tea tree oil, the calamine lotion, honey, calendula, ground turmeric, lavender oil and aloe vera gel can be applied directly to the blisters to relieve the itching. Refrigerated topical treatments before they are applied can make them particularly soothing.

Others find relief from soaking in a bath of warm water to which natural ingredients have been added. Oatmeal is often recommended for skin problems. It is most effective when the oats are ground a very fine consistency. This allows them to mix with water and adhere to the skin better. Alternatively, oats can be tied in a muslin bag or cheesecloth and allowed to soak in the bath water or held under running water.

Tonics other bath include water pea green – water in which the peas are cooked – and additives such as herbs like St. John's wort, yarrow and mint peppermint to name a few.

More help is available as teas such as chamomile, basil and Marigold. Boneset, burdock and catnip can help reduce fever.

Although not everyone will suffer a severe case of chickenpox, there natural remedies available for those who are in a situation that itch!
