How do you train a horse to lope?
Just curious. I watched a replay of a show western pleasure today and slow just above a trot Lope seemed very natural for me. I drive h / d and what I consider to be a slow process, you are-not-going-to-make-it-more-than-jump-Canter is faster than that. The horse I know just Canter slowly an old man four times when he is lazy. I was wondering how you train for such a movement slow when most horses seem to naturally go faster?
The key is in what you said – "naturally". I worked 8 years in Quarter Horses, Bob Perry, and we stood Zippo Pine Bar, Zips Chocolate Chip, Radical Rodder and lots of other pleasure champion western lords. We were the largest producers of WP in the United States. Coming from a racing background, I found it weird at first, but it seems that as tuberculosis spend some bulls along the lines of such a love of racing on hard ground or mud, bulls western pleasure not pass on this strange look lope. They were very right shanks for something that gives them the shuffle and just watch weanlings and yearlings on pasture, we could see them loping with a naturally low head carriage and poker right hind legs. When they started, they have broken the same as any horse and once we had them go foward, you then have worked to slow them back down while keeping the momentum. Even for the prospects of along the line, make them go and then slow down without losing that hard from behind. There is a lot of horses out there who are forced into this framework, etc. form, but a good horse he WP naturally does and this is really the key. Hope that helps. I am though – for me it was like going from one extreme to another, but you start to assess the movers really good.
